Charlie Smith: Chimney Rock

Chimney Rock - Charlie Smith

This was at least my second time through this book, and it was as gripping as I remember it from last time (it helped that I didn't remember the ending). The plot is dark and violent, and in another author's hands it might have been a gritty crime novel or a gothic family melodrama. But Smith's prose is beautiful, and his main character Will Blake is serenely detached from the mounting wreckage of his own life, so the result is artful and insightful, despite the horrific plot turns.Every time I read Charlie Smith I come away wanting to read more poetry, but I almost never find poetry as beautiful and moving as Smith's novels.
